Summary Of The Book This classic thriller, written in 1971, is the story of a plot to assassinate Charles de Gaulle, the President of France. The book begins with the real life attempt on de Gaulle’s life, by Col. Jean-Marie Bastien-Thiry, who belonged to the extreme right-wing group, the OAS. The French Secret Service infiltrated the organization and captured its chief of operations, Antoine Argoud. The novel begins after this event. Lt. Col. Marc Rodin, Argoud’s deputy, decides the only option left open to him if he wants to take down de Gaulle is to hire a professional assassin. And so, he embarks on a search to find one. Through his various contacts he manages to locate one. An Englishman who is simply known throughout the book by his codename, Jackal, or simply, the Englishman. Once the Jackal has been assigned the task, he sets about preparing for his job meticulously. He first does extensive research on his potential victim. He then acquires false passports and commissions a specially designed gun, extremely slim, with an efficient silencer. He then sets off on his mission, inexorably advancing towards his goal, all the while cloaked in anonymity. Meanwhile, the French secret service, who have been watching Rodin, learn of the plot, but have no clue as to the identity of the would-be assassin. They entrust the job of tracking down the killer and saving the president’s life to Claude Lebel. Lebel launches his quest to find out the identities of the best political assassins in Europe. His enquiries reach the Special Branch of the Scotland Yard. Despite strained relationship with France at the time, the British Prime Minister takes a personal interest as de Gaulle is a friend. Superintendent Bryn Thomas is chosen as the man for the job. Like his counterpart across the channel, Lebel, Thomas is given special powers for this investigation. Thomas and Lebel work together and get closer to finding the identity of the assassin, but they are betrayed by someone on their own side, and the Jackal always manages to keep one step ahead of them. They manage to find that the date set for the assassination to be 25th of August, Liberation Day. All the main characters in the story begin to assemble, and as the final hour approaches, it is a race against time to see which side wins.
